Musings

Last December, I went to my first poetry spoken event. I was there to hear my writing coach Beth Barany read a chapter of her novel for young adults. As I was listening to other authors read their work, it struck me how seemingly easy poetry is. In my typical Aries fashion, I said to myself “Oh! I can do that.” Like it was the easiest thing it the world to do, especially for someone who has just started to write seriously. On the other hand, Aries people are bold. Astrology says they tread where not even Angels dare to go.

But then I woke up this morning with snippets of a poem in my mind about colors. When I checked my email after breakfast, my friend Fernando had sent me an article about the properties of colors. Serendipity? Coincidence? Who knows? But here it goes.

Black void of color

White fullness of color

Verse and reverse passage of time in metronome cadence

Longest night, shortest day

Shortest night, longest day

Silver marriage of both illuminated

Hard Red, crimson, spat blood, laughter of lovely lips, in anger or in drunken penitence* (*Arthur Rimbaud “Vowels”)

Bubble blues of ocean color, clarion of spirit. Serenity of trust. Fluid grace gliding over silence

Yellow sun of ego heart, soaring to the skies

Orange of wintery persimmon fruit, juicy drippings of spring yet to come

Violet brilliance, plume dipped in venom, jabbing us of out gratuitous darkness.

What do you think? Chime in with your own ode to colors. And don’t forget – April is Poetry month!
